Phone Coaching, what is it and does it work? I frequently get asked about phone coaching and how it works. Also, I get asked about its effectiveness. When I first started learning about coaching I was surprised to learn that 90% of coaching is done over the phone and that it can be more effective than coaching in person. Here’s why: The advantages of coaching over the phone instead of an in-office face-to-face coaching session are startling. The advantage is that you can coach with someone that is simply not available in your area. Some communities have no trained marriage coaches, and telephone coaching is the only way to get help. But even in large areas, it is sometimes difficult to find someone trained in a particular method that you trust. The idea that a coaches physical presence is essential to coaching success is simply not true. In fact, I've discovered that I can help people by telephone that I could never have reached in person. They were too embarrassed to come to an office. But by telephone they can get all the help they need with complete privacy and very little initial effort. And the results are dramatic. Also, coaches are trained to listen. There are many auditory cues that a coach listens for. Some of these cues are more effective than visual cues. Also, statistically, clients feel less self conscious about discussing certain personal issues that they would otherwise feel awkward about discussing face to face. The telephone is more efficient.
